Layering is a Key Component in Paper Crafting
Hello friends, Today our design team is sharing their layering tips and tricks with lots of great examples! Layering is an important element in design because it adds texture, depth and focus to your paper crafting. For example, adding layers of paper and texture behind a photo brings the photo to the forefront of your story. Creating layered clusters that visually draw the eye around your page or card is another example of how this technique can help you tell your story or focus on an important message. Lets begin with this awesome TN design by Traci. "When I'm working in a traveler's notebook, I prefer to keep my layering as flat as possible so that I can get as many spreads into each notebook as I can. So to keep it interesting, I like to use as many different shapes and textures as I can!" "For this page, I used journaling cards, paper scraps, glittery stickers, die cuts, vellum, enamel stars AND sequins from Solstice, and yet it doesn't look too cluttered and doesn't add a lot of bulk to my pages!" "Bonus: because I'm always using paper scraps left over from other projects with the same collection, my product does REALLY far!" Next we have a pocket page design from Jil. "When scrapbooking in Project Life I love layering as much as I do in other forms of memory keeping. Here I layered my painted face photo on top of the striped vellum leftover from one of the summer Cocoa Daisy kits and put that on top of a pink filler card." "I layered my photo of new watercolors over a tag from the kits, and I stapled a bit of fabric to the tag to add another layer beneath. All of the photos were layered further with chipboard, stickers, stamping, and labels. My pocket cards were layered with typing, washi tape, stamping, and even a scrap of ephemera (the wrapping from one of the watercolors)." "My final layering includes wood veneer stars and sequins from the Solstice memory keeping classified kit, and as you can see from the close-up, I layered platinum embossing powder on the stars. So yes, I love layering, which is a key component of my style." Our final layered design is the adorable memory planner layout from Rachel. "Layering is one of my favorite things to do with all of my paper crafting projects! For memory planning, I love to layer stickers, paper, stamps, washi and even the photo’s themselves all together to make clusters." "Lately, I have had less photos to pull from, as we are still not venturing out very often and our days look pretty similar. But, I can always find SOMETHING to document! For this memory planner spread, I decided to focus on our ridiculous “co-worker” Lil’ Cat. This particular week, she “helped” my husband at work by chasing the mouse on his screen, patrolled our balcony and hunted bugs trying to disrupt our relaxation (she was on a break), and kneaded her favorite blanket while lounging on the chair she is not supposed to be on. She is a character to say the least." "To create this spread, I started with the photo placement and decided I wanted the photos to be layered together. A quick tip for building layers under photos - only add adhesive to the center of the photo. That way you can slip your layered embellishments under the photos with ease." "For the layers, I always like to pull from my pile of paper scraps first, rather than cutting into full sheets. I had plenty of paper scraps to choose from, including some leftover tags I made for another project. I even used a scrap from the kraft paper bag that the Classified kit came in!" "Another great item for layering the pocket cards and Planner Dashboards. When I saw the 'Follow Your Dreams' Dashboard, I knew I wanted to you use it as part of my title. I trimmed around the text with a little bit of the dashboard pattern still intact. I cut the left side of the circle so that it was adjacent to the top photo but slightly over lapping the bottom photo. Once adhered, I added the rest of the title with alphas from the Classified Memory Keeping Kit." "The final layered embellishment was stickers! I love having parts of stickers peaking out from behind photos, and adding stickers directly on top of photos as well. Lastly, I added my journaling to one of the sticky notes that I nestled in under the title and next to the bottom photo."
