Using Basic Elements in Your Layouts

Here we are, already in the second week of March! Today we want to share ideas for using basic elements from our kits in your layouts. Let’s begin with DT member Kristine’s Happy Planner layout.
“The basic elements in the monthly kits are always my go-to elements for creating my Happy Planner layouts.”
“The Memory Keeping Sticker Kit is always a favorite, especially the sheet of vellum stickers - I love how they look like they’ve been printed on the page!”
“Washi makes the edges of my pages pretty, and a few die cuts here and there finish it off nicely.”

Kristine’s Happy Planner designs always come together beautifully and she uses many of the our kit’s basic elements each month. We love to see the before and after photos of her elegant layouts. Next let’s see what Iris has created for us in her signature 12x12 format.
“With the mild weather in California, I’ve been taking evening photo walks. Even after 2 years, my neighborhood still feels new, and I’m loving exploring while it’s still green. My friend and former Cocoa Daisy team member Suzanna Lee has done a layout series of the front of her home in different seasons, and I wanted to do something like that. The colors and sentiments in the Orchard Path kits are absolutely perfect for this!“
“I’ve been on a 12x12 photo kick lately, and to make a big impact on the full photo, I decided on using repetition. I concentrated on word strip die cuts and stickers, arranging most at the bottom 2 inches of the photo where the dark grey asphalt is. But, I always like to introduce some asymmetry for interest, so I stuck a bit of floral washi from the Planner kit vertically on the left corner and added two Heidi Swapp tags from the Classified Memory Keeping edition kit.”
“For the top half, I was admiring the amazing birch pattern paper with floral corners from the Planner kit, and thought it would be great to fussy-cut out. That way it could flank the sides and blend in with the branches that are in my photo. However, each side of the paper faces the same way, and wouldn’t have the right draping effect. But I lucked out; the newsletter subscriber freebie this month is a replica of that birch paper! Yay!”
“I was able to bring it into Photoshop, resize it to match the kit paper, and flip it so that I had a mirror image of the design. I ended up printing both the original and the flipped one on 8.5x11 matte photo paper and fussy cutting them out, leaving me the original in case I want to use the other patterned side. They didn’t quite meet in the middle, so I tucked in one of the die cut flowers and it now looks seamless.”
“I added the title with alpha stickers from both the Memory Keeping Pocket kit and Traveler’s Notebook kit because I love that they are the same alpha, just different shades of color. The final touches were journaling on the tag, tying some matching threads to both tags, and a line of stitching at the top edge to anchor it all down.“
“This is a look that can be achieved even without a full 12x12 photo. You can print an 8.5x11 photo, or order an 8x10 print if that’s more accessible. Then add paper on the top, bottom to get to 12 inches and decorate with repeating elements extending from the photo all the way up and down your page. You can decide to add paper on one or both sides to make the layout 12 inches across, but keep the decorating in a column where your photo is for maximum impact!
