Pocket Card Ideas & Tips

Pocket memory keeping is extremely popular and there are a wide variety of albums and pocket protectors available to suit everyone interested in this medium today. And pocket cards can be used outside of pockets in fun and unique ways too. The pocket cards in our kits are versatile and can be used in many ways including embellishing to customize them for your story, fussy cutting to create ephemera or titles, or cutting them down to use in memory planners. Design team members Jil and Audrey have used items from our Tulip Time collection to create the designs we are sharing today.
Audrey will start us off today. "Hello Friends!! Today, I am bringing you some tips on working with journal cards in a larger format, 12x12 layout."
"TIP 1: Think of the journal cards as a grid and lay them out like that. Here, I did two rows of journal cards in a grid style layout."
"TIP 2: In your grid, mix journal cards by using a patterned journal card with quote cards. On the patterned journal card, add a few embellishments to create dimension."
"TIP 3: In your journal card grid, use some pop dots to pop up your pictures. This will add both height and dimension which will make your layout less monotone."
"TIP 4: Embellish around the grid of your journal cards with mixed media. Here, I used the butterfly stencil and loosely painted the butterflies with gold and white paint. I then loosely traced the butterflies with the pen from the planner kit. I didn't trace them perfectly because I wanted a dreamy effect. I also traced some butterflies without paint as well, all around the border of the journal card grid."
"TIP 5: Use the vellum butterflies to pull it all together. I scattered them around the page, and embroidered the center with floss from my stash. I then pulled the wings up slightly to make them look like they were flying. The flying butterflies pulls the entire layout together. I hope these tips help you to break out of the pocket page and experiment. Tag me if you do so. I can't wait to see what you create."
Next we have a pocket page design for you from Jil. "Here I'm having fun with the pocket cards in a traditional way--in pockets!--but I'm also emphasizing how versatile Cocoa Daisy kits are by using the Tulip Time stamps and embellishments on cards from the February kit, as I catch-up on documenting 2020. The first technique to notice is that some cards make excellent homes for photos. The photo of my dog in the top right was printed at 3x3 and placed in between the word banners 'It's a Sweet' and 'Life.'"
"Similarly, the snowy tree photo finds a home under the banner on the 'perfect little moments' card. Even though these cards are great for journaling, remember that photos work well, too, layered on pocket cards. Speaking of layers, I love them on my pocket pages! You'll see from my spread that I've layered with labels, washi tape, puffy stickers (the ones in Tulip Time are so sweet!), and word/phrase stickers."
"The 'Hello, my name is' card features a small layered tag, to which I added messy thread and repeat stamping of the phrase "loving this life." I had fun mixing snowflake images and flower stamps from the kit because really, by late-February, I'm already thinking about flowers, even--or especially--on snowy days. Remember that alpha stickers are great on pocket cards. Here I spell out my dog's name (her birthday is in February), and I use alpha stickers on the lower right photo of my student to make the phrase 'creative passion,' combining the stickers with the black puffy words from Tulip Time."
"My colors on this spread are plum, pink, and peach (with touches of blue and green), and so my last layer for the cards was a splatter of dark purple spray ink and some peach enamel dots from my stash."
"I hope you're seeing that the possibilities are endless, and all of these ideas are easy to adapt to your own style. Whether you use cards on a pocket page spread or on a layout in another format, pull out your favorite cards from the kits and have fun dressing them up!"
