Memory Keeping Design Ideas with Layering
Hello friends,
We are glad you can join us today to see our design team’s ideas for layering with the March and April kits. We have three AMAZING layouts to share so let’s jump right in with Odessa’s TN spread in her Orchard Path Simple Dori.
“Is there such a thing as too many layers? I don’t think so! I started this Traveler’s Notebook page using a tag from the Orchard Path kits and kept adding more and more and then even more.“
“My background is a birch-like print from the Traveler’s Notebook and a cute floral paper that reminded me of wallpaper. I kept the left side very simple, both because of the strong pattern on the paper and the intense layers on the right side. I used some alpha and phrase stickers from the Memory Keeping Sticker Kit along with a nice die cut flag to make a title.“
“On the right side I used everything and anything! I started with 3 things: the floral tag, a photo strip and a journal card from the Pocket Memory Keeping Kit that I stuck down above the tag. Once I laid everything down I started adding some fav kit components. Die cut florals, glitter enamel dots, flair and that adorable cat paper clip from the Classified Memory Keeping Kit all flew on to my page along with more paper and stickers and even more die cuts. I simply pulled out things from the Orchard Path kits I loved and moved them around my page to see if they worked. It was so fun to just play around!”
Wow, there are so many cute ideas in Odessa’s layered design. I took a few notes for myself! Next we have another TN design with the Up and Away kits by Jil.
“My page uses the happy, colorful Up and Away kit. One of my favorite techniques is cascading layers, which I created here to have fun with the bright papers in the kit and to tell the story of the delight for my grandnephews (and us) now that they have a baby sister. I move from plus signs (appropriate!) to dots to raindrops to colorful, girly watercolor flowers! This progression of papers was then fluffed up a bit and embellished with rainbows, rainbow hearts, and a few apt stickers ("cute," "family fun," and "sunny day"--our new little girl is named Sunny!).”
“I typed my journaling on a tag from the March kit, tying and stapling the baker's twine from the Up and Away kit. To complete my design, I layered a little more beneath the journaling, including just a bit of the rainbow washi tape. It was fun to create a childlike vibe with this kit, which was just right for my photo!“
Such a sweet story and Jil’s layering is a great way to add texture and interest in your TN with our exclusive papers. Our final layered design is a 12x12 layout from Iris with the Orchard Path kits. “Layers, layers, layers! I love layering because it is very approachable. You can have so much fun making a pretty page without any special techniques or tools!”
“For my layered layout, I first fanned out a selection of the papers from the Memory Keeping Pocket Kit, alternating and varying their placement until I liked the amount of contrast and areas they extended above and below my top layer. The more you do this, the more corners and overlapping areas you get that are perfect for clusters and tucking little bits. I also picked one of the journaling cards that supported my story to serve as visible journaling, because my actual journaling is hidden behind the layers. I had a lot more to say that I felt I could fit in my design, and the journaling is more for me than anyone else.”
“To hide my journaling, I made a pocket. I admit, I didn’t want to waste any of the lovely papers, so I traced around where they overlapped and gutted the sections that aren’t showing. That left me with a back that I needed to cover so that my hidden journaling wouldn’t get caught on the edges. To do this, before adhering anything to my cardstock, I adhered the layers to each other, then I flipped the whole mass over. I covered all four sides with adhesive tape, cut a scrap piece of cardstock to fit, and adhered it behind my layers. Then I placed more adhesive tape on only 3 sides and adhered that to my background, leaving one side open for my journaling!”
“I added my photos, then I had fun decorating! I know I said no special tools, but I did pull out a couple of old punches to punch a notebook edge along the top of the journal card and a scallop edge along the bottom of the blue grid paper. They add just that much more interest and it feels so good to use those old punches I’ve hung onto! I tucked tabs, die cuts, stickers, and rubber charms at intersections to create a lot of dynamic movement. I tore edges, bent corners, and ruffled the layers in random areas to provide texture. I also stapled a few of the die cut banner shapes and the torn paper edges with rose gold staples using the Heidi Swapp Mini Stapler. They perfectly match the lovely peach-pink tones of the Orchard Path kits. I cut the scallop border from one of the 4x6 journaling cards to slip between the 2nd and 3rd layer. I added encouraging words trailing down from my photos, overlapping layers. Finally, I added floral washi from the Traveler’s Notebook kit peeking from under the left and top layers, and another strip on the right edge of the layout, giving me a visual triangle and an area for one last cluster.”
“I typed my journaling on vellum (so that it would stand out more) and adhered it to the birch and flowers paper from the Planner kit that I cut down a bit to fit in my pocket. By the way, the Ranger Mini Collage Glue Stick is one of the best adhesives for vellum because it doesn’t cause vellum to curl, holds strong, and doesn’t show through. I created a pull tab from one of the speech bubbles, an index sticker from the Planner Kit, and a word strip from the Memory Keeping Sticker Kit.”
“My final touches were to accent the existing clusters with enamel dots, and to do a light sprinkling of three ink colors across the top and bottom, to help the stark white background blend with the layers. I hope this inspires you to really go all out with your layering!”
