Elizabeth Joregnson: Don’t Forget to Play! Creative Kit Exploration

Hello friends! Elizabeth here from @thejoyfulsojourn on Instagram and YouTube, to share how I used the Moss and Mirth Creative Kit to create a decorative spread marking the start of November in my daughter’s memory-keeping journal.

This B6 notebook houses significant memories. Within its pages are birthday notes, photos, and reflections on the big life of my little toddler. And before a new month begins, I like to mark its start with a seasonal spread to set the tone for the pages to come. Real talk: you absolutely can (and should) create pages like these regularly in your journals, with no other objective than to play! So whether it’s a journal for memory keeping, or a notebook you keep just for the sake of play, I hope you’ll have fun and do just that! The Creative Kit is an excellent option for creative journaling, so let’s get to it…

The star of the Moss and Mirth Creative Kit (for me this month) is the mini washi sticker book! I decided to create ‘framed artwork’ with the stickers, doodling out a black frame, and filling it with washi stickers. In the upper left corner, you can see 3 washi stickers slimmed down and cut to fit within the drawn frame. I used the slice precision cutter to trim the stickers within the black border.

I replicated this design – framed washi stickers – in the lower left corner with a mushroom washi sticker, and then layered rub-on transfers around the corner of the page. One of my all-time favorite products from the Moss and Mirth Creative Kit is the inky-looking rub-on transfers; they add so much whimsy to any spread.

I varied the sizes of the drawn frames on each quadrant of the spread, and mixed washi sticker images for balance. I really love how the mushroom washi sticker sits next to the typewriter font washi sticker in this upper-right corner frame. In addition to framing out the washi stickers, I ripped them and dispersed them around the spread. I knew I wanted to use the ‘etc’ washi sticker, but was limited on space and wanted it to look more rustic. So I tore it up, narrowed it out, and wedged it between the spine of the book and the mushroom transfer. Another washi sticker was ripped into smaller shards and dispersed around the layout to bring it all together.

I hope this layout gives you the inspiration and courage to try new ways of using familiar products like washi stickers! And remember – creative play IS productive. You can decorate a couple of pages in your dot grid journal with no objective, no reason, no writing – let the creative process be the ‘end’, and have fun!
